WG Small wind
THE CHALLENGE:
Wind can provide an endlessly renewable source of energy even far away from developed power grids—if only wind power technology can be disseminated.
OUR APPROACH:
Focusing on small-scale wind power to improve access to this form of energy.
THE WORKING GROUP:
This working group is conducting studies, transferring technology, facilitating financing, building capacity, and implementing projects.
THE CONVENER:
Korea Wind Energy Industry Association

The Wind Power working group
Wind has the potential to solve many problems found in poorer regions in Asia. The electricity it can generate, even on a small scale, is enough to pump water, provide lighting, charge batteries, or accomplish any other number of critical services.
The Wind Power working group focuses on small-scale wind power to help develop and deploy projects that can improve access to this promising and underutilized form of energy.
Planned Activities
- Technical evaluation and feasibility studies
- Technology transfer and manufacturing optimization
- Financing and implementation arrangements
- Capacity building
- Project implementation
The Working Group will expand its scope to larger-scale wind in a later phase.

INCEPTION WORKSHOP, 7 December 2009
The inception meeting of the Wind Power working group was held in Seoul, Korea, on 7 December 2009. This meeting was hosted by Mr. Soo Yang Han, Standing Advisor and former CEO of POSCO Engineering & Construction (E&C), and chairman of the working group. Representatives from industry, governments, development partners, non-government organizations, financial institutions, advisory firms, and a research and development institute attended as participants and observers.
The working group agreed to focus on small-scale wind at the outset and align its activities with ADB’s Regional Technical Assistance on Effective Deployment of Distributed Small Wind Power Systems in Asian Rural Areas, which is expected to begin implementation in early 2010.
